Miniature Schnauzer General Appearance:

Developed from a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and a smaller breed, like the Poodle or Affenpinscher, the Miniature Schnauzer is a small dog that weighs between 10 to 18 pounds and stands between 13 and 14 inches tall. They have a square-shaped body, a rectangular head, and bushy fur that forms the breed’s characteristic beard, mustache, and eyebrows. Their ears are pointed, and their tails are thin and short.

The Miniature Schnauzer has a double coat. While the black Miniature Schnauzer is one of three recognized coat colors (including black/silver and salt and pepper), the white Miniature Schnauzer is a controversial color variant within the breed. It isn’t clear where the white coat color comes from — it may be a recessive gene within the original breed, or it may be the result of mating with other breeds.

Miniature Schnauzer Temperament:

Miniature Schnauzers are alert, spirited, friendly dogs with a strong territorial instinct, which makes them great watchdogs! They’re loyal and obedient, and they’re known to remain aloof toward strangers until their human says everything is okay.

Train and socialize your Miniature Schnauzer puppies early on — while this breed is always willing to learn new tricks, they have a high prey drive, and they will naturally want to attack small animals (and even other dogs) unless you teach them otherwise.

These pups are super playful, so you’ll want to find ways to channel their energy with long walks, plenty of playtime, and even dog agility classes. A Miniature Schnauzer can be a fun, friendly, and wonderful companion!
