German Shorthaired Pointer General Appearance

The German Shorthaired Pointer — also known as the German Pointer or Deutsch Kurzhaar in German — is a working dog with a compact build, semi-long, floppy ears, broad skull, almond-shaped eyes, and a high tail that is typically docked. Their short, thick, mildly coarse coat is either solid liver (a reddish-brown color) or a combination of liver and white. German Pointers weigh 45 to 70 pounds and stand 21 to 25 inches tall.

German Shorthaired Pointer Temperament

The German Shorthair Pointer was bred as a hunting and family dog. This breed is intelligent, boisterous, and affectionate. They get along with children and other dogs, and they love to play! German Shorthaired Pointers have a natural instinct to hunt, so unless you want them to bring home little "trophies" (i.e. cats, rabbits, rats, or pigeons), consistent exercise and training is a must. Luckily, this breed is easy to train! If you want an active dog that loves to be around you and your family, German Shorthaired Pointers are a great fit.

German Shorthaired Pointer Fun Fact

For hunting dogs, speed and endurance is crucial. The German Short-haired Pointer can run up to 45 mph — faster than most other dog breeds!
