Chow Chow General Appearance:

The Chow Chow is a large breed that weighs between 55 and 70 pounds for male dogs and 45 to 60 pounds for female Chow Chows. They usually have a red coat, and are easily distinguished by a thick mane of hair — hence the nickname “The Lion Dog.” Chow Chows can also have a black, blue, fawn, or cream coat. Perhaps the most distinguishable physical characteristic of the Chow Chow is the famous blue/black tongue.

Chow Chow Temperament:

The Chow Chow has been described as a dog with a cat-like personality. They are not pack dogs, and can show aggression to other dogs and cats. Their fierce protectiveness over their owner can result in aggressive and territorial behaviour unless they are well socialized at a young age. Becoming a Chow Chow owner may mean higher insurance premiums, as they are sometimes considered a high-risk dog breed.

Chow Chow Fun Fact:

The Chow Chow is called Songshi Quan in its native China, which translates to Puffy Lion Dog.
