Cairn Terrier General Appearance:

Recognized as one of the oldest terrier breeds, the Cairn Terrier is a small dog that stands between 9 and 10 inches tall. They weigh between 13 and 14 pounds, and as working terriers, they have a hardy, short-legged body type. The Cairn Terrier is known for their double-coated, weather-resistant coat. Cairn Terriers have a variety of coat colors, although white coats are rare. They have small, pointed ears and shaggy eyebrows.

Cairn Terrier Temperament:

The Cairn Terrier is an alert and active dog, known for their natural agility. But because they’re so intelligent, they can be troublemakers if they’re not properly exercised — these dogs love to chase small animals, and even larger dogs! Cairn Terriers are known for their stubbornness, so you should train your Cairn Terrier puppies consistently (and lovingly).

While Cairn Terriers can be great apartment dogs, they need daily exercise and play. You should also plan on doing training sessions with your dog to help them channel their active energy into fun tricks!

Cairn Terrier Fun Fact:

In the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, Terry — who played Toto, Dorothy’s dog — was a brindle Cairn Terrier!
