Bouvier des Flandres General Appearance

The Bouvier des Flandres is a compact, but powerful dog in the herding group. Also known as the Belgian Cattle Dog, they have a muscular, regal build. Their neck gently slopes into powerful shoulders and a sturdy, broad back. Bouvier des Flandres dogs have a large head that is slightly longer than it is wide, and a strong, broad muzzle.

Their facial expression is brave and alert, and features both a moustache and a beard. Their dark brown, oval-shaped eyes have black rims. The Bouvier des Flandres dog has high-set, often cropped ears, and strong, muscular forelegs and hindquarters. Their tail is set high and is almost always docked. They have a weatherproof double coat with a dense, soft undercoat and a rough, coarse outer coat. The coat coloring on a Bouvier des Flandres can be fawn, salt and pepper, gray, black or brindle.

Bouvier des Flandres Temperament

The Bouvier des Flandres is a gentle, yet strong-willed dog that often intimidates strangers, but is even-tempered and affectionate toward their family. When trained properly, Bouvier des Flandres make excellent guard dogs, but in order to prevent dominance issues, Bouvier des Flandres puppies must be trained early in life. It’s also important for them to be socialized early because they are protective of their family and territory.
