Basset Hound Appearance

Basset Hounds are famous for their loose skin, which gives them droopy, sad-looking eyes and floppy ears that hang below their head. Though Basset Hounds are short, usually no taller than 14 inches at the shoulder, they are also long and beefy. They can grow to weigh up to 65 pounds. The coloring of a Basset Hound can vary, including tri-color (tan, black, and white), black and white, brown and white, or red and white. Their short coat sheds regularly, and therefore requires frequent brushing.

Basset Hound Temperament

Basset Hounds might look constantly tired and sad, but they are actually affectionate and active. They might bark if an unknown guest greets their home, but they’ll calm down after just a minute. While they enjoy the company of their family, they are also known for being fiercely independent. This can make training a challenge. Fortunately, Basset Hounds love to eat, so they can be effectively trained with positive reinforcement in the form of treats.

Basset Hound Fun Fact

Basset Hounds have been popular showbiz dogs for decades. Elvis Presley sang “Hound Dog” to a Basset on The Steve Allen Show. Columbo’s dog, Dog, was a Basset.
