Breed History
The Toy Fox Terrier was created in America during the 20th century by crossing the larger Smooth Fox Terrier with a number of different toy breeds, such as the Manchester Terrier, Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound and Miniature Pinscher....
The resulting dog had a milder and more biddable disposition than its constituent breeds while retaining the sharp terrier instincts of the Smooth Fox Terrier. The United Kennel Club recognized these dogs as Smooth Fox Terriers from 1912 until 1936, when it was decided they were a separate breed and given the name Toy Fox Terrier. The Toy Fox Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2003.Toy Fox Terriers are very active and intelligent dogs that make wonderful hunters, companions and show ring participants. Many Toy Fox Terriers are trained to participate in Obedience or Agility trials, while others work as service dogs, hearing dogs or circus dogs.
