French Brittany Dog Breed Info & Pictures

The French Brittany is a medium-sized sporting dog that originated in France in the early 1900s. Due to the French Brittanys long legs and light build, this dog is agile and fast. Also called French Brittany Spaniels, these athletic sporting dogs are often used for bird hunting. The French Brittany has an average-sized head and long, floppy ears. Most are born with short tails and come in color variations including orange and white or liver and white. The coat of the French Brittany is long, but their shedding is minimal. Many breeders differentiate between the French Brittany and the American Brittany. The French Brittany dog is usually smaller and works better as a gun dog and bird dog. French Brittanys are also known for working better in the field, but the two are generally considered as subdivisions of the same breed.

Temperament

The French Brittany Spaniel is an energetic hunting and bird dog that requires a lot of exercise....

Due to the amount of energy this dog has, they are usually not suitable for apartment living. When they arent given enough exercise, the French Brittany can become hyperactive and hypersensitive. The French Brittany is great for families with children because of their playful and sweet nature with kids. These dogs are easily trained and make great companions. Their independence and intelligence allows the French Brittany to adjust to multiple environments, whether it is in the field hunting or hanging out with the family. The French Brittany is the perfect breed if you are looking for a dog to accompany you in the field while also getting the love and loyalty that comes with having a pet.

Caring For a French Brittany

While the French Brittany Spaniel is loving and sweet in nature, they require a lot of exercise and are better suited for a space where they can run freely....

These dogs work great in the field for hunting and usually require about an hour or more of outdoor exercise per day. When training your French Brittany, it is important to note their bird-crazy hunting instincts. While French Brittanys work to please you and will look to you for direction, their energy and drive to hunt can often distract them from their task. For grooming, the French Brittany has longer hair, but they are still a low-maintenance breed. They do not shed very much and only need to be groomed once in a while for a trim. While the French Brittany is not hypoallergenic, they are still a great option for owners who do not want hair all over the house.

Breed History

The French Brittany Spaniel originates from parts of France, where it was originally bred as a skilled bird and hunting dog....

The French Brittany was first shown in a dog show in France in 1900 and was acknowledged as a breed in 1907. America did not recognize the breed until a few decades later, which is why there is a discrepancy between the French Brittany and the American Brittany, although they are usually considered part of the same breed. In recent years, the Spaniel is often dropped from the title of the French Brittany. The French Brittany has risen in popularity due to its medium size, sweet personality, and hunting skills.
