Cockapoo Dog Breed Info & Pictures

Known as the original designer dog, the first Cockapoo puppy was born in the US in the 1950s! Cockapoos are a bright-eyed and affectionate mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. As with most hybrids, the Cockapoo can be a combination of the most desired traits from both parent breeds. They have the affectionate, friendly nature of the Cocker Spaniel with the low-dander, low-shedding traits of the Poodle. Like Cocker Spaniels, Cockapoos love to follow their nose. But since they also have the people-loving traits of Poodles, the Cockapoo is easy to train! Cockapoos have fluffy, curly coats, and they dont produce much dander but they dont require as much grooming as Poodles do!

Since the Cockapoo is a cross-breed, there are no consistent physical or temperamental characteristics....

Some Cockapoos may have more dominant Poodle genes, while others may have more traits from their Cocker Spaniel side. This gives Cockapoos a huge range in appearance, and Cockapoo puppies from the same litter may appear to be two different breeds! Cockapoo puppies must be socialized early on so that they dont become shy or wary of new people or pets. Positive reinforcement with food rewards, play, and praise often work well with Cockapoo puppies. One Cockapoo characteristic that appears to be consistent is their loyal love for their humans. When they are bred in a responsible, healthy manner, they can have the intelligence of the Poodle and the sturdy build of the Cocker Spaniel. Cockapoos are happiest when they get regular exercise, and they love playing fetch! Make sure that you have enough time to dedicate to your Cockapoo, as they can be a needy breed. Cockapoos believe that they should always be near their owner, and they often suffer from separation anxiety, or get stressed if left alone for long periods of time.

Caring For a Cockapoo

Although Cockapoos are considered designer dogs, responsible Cockapoo breeders strive for a healthy, even-tempered dog, rather than a cute but unstable purse puppy....

Cockapoo puppies love to eat and can quickly gain weight. In addition to frequent exercise, you must feed your dog high-quality dog food. A Cockapoo is susceptible to common health issues from both sides of their genes. While some say that the diversity of having mixed genes can lower the risks, you should educate yourself on the health of your Cockapoos parents. A Cockapoo can have tight curls, loose curls, or even a straight coat closer to that of a Cocker Spaniels. Although Poodles can be hypoallergenic, Cockapoos wont necessarily share this quality. Some people may have less severe allergic reactions to certain breeds, but no breeder should guarantee that their dogs are hypoallergenic. Especially when it comes to a mixed breed, their specifics are unknown.

Cockapoo History

Breed History

In the 1950s, the first Cockapoo was created thanks to an unplanned breeding of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle....

Thats right the fluffy pup is the result of a happy accident! After seeing the adorable, well-behaved, and family-friendly Cockapoo, more breeders decided to follow suit. With that, the first designer dog was created. Some believe that a Cockapoo must come from a purebred Cocker Spaniel and a purebred Poodle, while others hope to develop the breed and eventually create a breed standard by using multigenerational Cockapoos.
