Can I Give My Dog Benadryl?

Yes! Benadryl is a safe allergy medication for dogs, providing you give them the correct dosage.

If you want to give your dog Benadryl, it’s important to understand the correct dosage. For a Benadryl tablet, give your pooch 1 mg per pound of body weight. The standard dose of Benadryl is 25 mg, so double up if you have a 50 lb. dog, or break it in half if you have a little mutter. Always double check the dosage when you purchase Benadryl to make sure you’ve calculated the right ratio. You can give your dog this weight-based dosage 2-3 times a day.

Benadryl Ingredients

The main ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine. Most pharmacies offer generic versions for less than the brand name version.

Symptoms of Allergies in Dogs

So why would you give Benadryl to dogs? My rescue hound/love of my life came along with a case of the mad itchies. Before you jump to conclusions, I had him on an anti-flea regime immediately! But the lil’ guy just couldn’t stop chewing or licking his paws. Turns out, he has allergies. My dog exhibited most of these symptoms before the vet confirmed it for us:

  • Constant licking or scratching
  • Runny, itchy eyes
  • Itchy ears
  • Sneezing
  • Paw chewing
  • Snoring
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

I took my pup to the vet, just to make sure everything was A-OK. If your dog has any of these symptoms, take them for a quick checkup to eliminate any other underlying issues.

Benadryl For Dogs

My vet recommended using Benadryl when my dog was super itchy, but stressed that it’s not a permanent solution. Talk to your vet about what could be causing the problem, but common culprits for pet allergies include:

  • Fleas (always rule this out first!)
  • Dust mites
  • Feathers
  • Food
  • Cleaning agents
  • Smoke
  • Plants or flowers

For environmental allergies, like the ones my dog has, I give him a bath once a week with a special pet shampoo designed to alleviate itching without drying out the skin. I fill up the bath with a little warm water before wrestling him into it.

This allows me to soak his paws, which is where the majority of allergens build up. To prepare you for that thrilling weekly dalliance, I’ll leave you with this video of dogs who hate baths. I hope your pup feels better soon!
